Bed Bug Prevention Tips for Travelers: Protect Your Home

Travel is the number one way bed bugs spread. They don't care if you're staying in a five-star luxury resort or a budget hostel — bed bugs are hitchhikers, and they are excellent at climbing into suitcases, clothing, and backpacks.
Fortunately, you don't have to live in fear of traveling. By adding a few simple habits to your travel routine, you can protect your luggage and ensure you don't bring an expensive infestation home with you.
1. The 'S.C.R.E.E.N.' Hotel Room Inspection Before you unpack or settle into your hotel room, perform a quick 5-minute inspection. Keep your luggage on the luggage rack (away from the bed) or in the bathroom (where tile floors make it hard for bugs to hide) while you check:
- **S - Sheets**: Pull back the sheets and blankets. Check the mattress protector and mattress surface for tiny black spots (fecal matter) or shed skins.
- **C - Corners**: Pay close attention to the corners of the mattress and the seams of the box spring.
- **R - Room Seams**: Check the headboard (especially the back, if it hangs on the wall), nightstands, and nearby upholstered chairs.
- **E - Examine the Luggage Rack**: Check the straps and joints of the luggage rack before placing your bags on it.
2. Protect Your Luggage * Keep your bags closed when not in use. * Avoid placing your suitcase directly on the bed or carpet. Use the luggage rack or keep bags elevated. * Consider using sealed plastic bags (like Ziplocs) inside your suitcase to organize your clothes. This creates an extra barrier.
3. What to Do When You Return Home Don't let your guard down once you get back. Take these steps immediately:
- **Unpack Straight into the Laundry**: Wash all travel clothing (even the clean, unworn stuff) in hot water and dry on high heat for at least 30 minutes. The heat of the dryer is lethal to bed bugs at all stages.
- **Inspect Your Suitcase**: Vacuum your suitcase inside and out, paying attention to seams and pockets. Empty the vacuum bag or canister immediately into an outdoor trash bin.
- **Store Bags Safely**: Store your luggage in a garage, attic, or sealed plastic bin rather than under your bed.
What if You Suspect You Brought Them Home? If you've recently returned from a trip and notice unexplained bites, or find a suspicious insect near your bed, don't wait.
